Yet again another case where breeders will NOT recognise or act upon a severe case of Hip Dysplacia.
Calls and letters going unanswered yet again. WHY?
They were happy enough to take cash for her in a sale, yet they will not even offer any help or advice to her owners. Absolutely NO recognition or reports to the Breed Council.
This Chow lady has been through so much surgery, her owners are now wondering just how much more she can take
I admire their efforts, determination and sacrifices to get this Chow lady as fit and mobile as can be.
She is loved so very much.

Saffie’s Owners Report is below.
It will give any other owner an insight into what has to be done in the same case. Saffie is loved and money was never an option in her treatment though vet costs for hip replacements can spiral. Insurance is essential.
Saffie’s breeders simply MUST remove her parents from any further breeding whatsoever though without any contact other than to report her condition to them, it would seem they are just not interested and will continue to produce puppies with the same outcome as Saffie. In all concience, if you are looking for a puppy then stay WELL CLEAR OF MR & MRS ROGERS of SYLVRIC CHOWS, any any puppy with their affix SYLVRIC within the pedigree.
This is my report of my beautiful chow chow SYLVRIC LILY POTTER better known to us as Saffie........
We purchased Saffie on October 23rd 2009 from Mr. and Mrs. Rogers aka SYLVRIC from Devon. She seemed to thrive and do really well until August 8th 2010 when suddenly she became slightly lame on her left hand hind leg, This seemed to ease up after a bit of rest but then on the 10th august 2010 she came in the house squealing with pain and this time was holding her right hind leg, she was holding it really tight into her body,
I immediately phoned the vets and they told me to bring her down straight away which was what I did,
They said they would keep her in for x rays, which wasn’t good news when they phone me back and told me Saffie had severe double hip dysplacia and she was quite bow legged as well.
As you can imagine I was totally shocked by this news and was told she may have to have double hip replacement if she couldn’t cope. Saffie was sent back home and put on Metacam to try and help with the problem. We were advised to give Saffie loads of rest so we went out and purchased a cage to which we only ever used once because Saffie had other ideas.
When we got her home she was restless and seemed very uncomfortable, she wouldn’t eat which caused a problem with her medication as this has to be given on her food. After the news about Saffie I decided to phone her breeder and spoke to Mr. Rogers as Mrs. Rogers was out. I told him all about Saffie's problems I also mentioned to him that Saffie has in turn eyelashes. He told me he didn’t deal with the breeding his wife did and he would get her to call me as soon as she got back home and guess what, I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING back off the breeders.
On the 12th August 2010 I took Saffie back to the vets as she still wasn’t coping very well at home with the pain and the hips constantly popping in and out As she wasn’t eating the bet advised we try giving her ranitidine and antepsin which would hopefully settle her stomach and encourage her to eat The vet also decided to try Saffie on tramadol for the pain and again she was admitted into hospital She was discharged 2 days later still on Metacam, tramadol and ranitidine and antepsin and again we were advised plenty of cage rest.
We returned to the vets on the 17th August for another check up where we were advised by the vet that she should have her right hip replaced first as this was the 1 giving her more grief but i was advised that she wouldn’t have this done until she was 1 because of her bones still growing. Imagine the shock when I realised she was going to have to suffer until then. I took Saffie back home and had to sit and watch her suffering every day and to be honest it broke my heart to see such a young dog not been able to live a normal life.
I had a holiday booked which I was going to cancel until the vet said they were happy to keep her there, (obviously at a cost) to which I agreed because I realised i was on a very long road ahead.
Saffie went into the vets the day before I went on my holiday and the vet said they would do the x rays and templates for her new right hip. Saffie had x rays done on 3rd September 2010. Whilst on my holiday I phoned the vet every day to check how Saffie was doing. I picked Saffie up on the 10th September.
Saffie’s first hip was scheduled for 1st October 2010. I took her in on the morning, dropped her off and said my good byes (with a tear in my eye),about an hour later I got a phone and thought the worst, but was told Saffie couldn’t have the operation as she had a severe skin condition which they had only found once she had had the anaesthetic and they had shaved her up.
She was put on Ceporex for the skin condition as well as all the other meds as well. We were also given hibiscrub to bathe Saffie’s skin in.
Had to take Saffie back to vets on 2nd October as skin was driving her mental, was given fuciderm cream and prednicare to try and stop the irritation. I returned to the vets on 8th October for a check up and the vet said her skin was starting to improve and possibly reschedule first hip operation in a weeks time. I took Saffie back to the vets on 15th October and was told her skin was still improving slightly. I had to continue with all her meds.
I took Saffie back to the vets on 22nd October but her skin has stopped improving so they took a skin swab to be sent off.
I took Saffie back on 29th October and was told she would need Synulux now for her skin.(I’m really surprised Saffie doesn’t rattle when she walks the amount of tablets she is now on), and I was also given some piriton because she was constantly scratching her skin. I returned to the vets on 12th November for yet another check up. The vet said her skin had improved greatly so he scheduled her first hip operation for a weeks time.
Saffie was admitted on the 19th November for her right hip replacement. Hooray the operation went ahead as planned, what a relief when the vet phoned later that day to say the operation was a success although it wasn’t as straight forward as hoped as she didn’t have a very good pelvic bone for the new hip to be attached too but even so it was all done now.
Saffie was discharged from the vets on 22nd November, still on Metacam, tramadol, synulux and piriton. The vet used a towel to support Saffie’s rear end as she was unable to weight bear. This was a nightmare trying to use this and hold her lead as well every time she went out for the toilet so nanny stepped in and made a sling out of a bath mat and some old seat belt to make handles and I have to say this has been a blessing.
Unfortunately after the hip operation I also found out that her right knee was now dislocated so that would have to be the next operation.
I took Saffie back to the vets on 29th November to have her stitches out. They couldn’t take them all out as it hadn’t healed. We went back on 4th December and they took the rest of her stitches out. Saffie is still on Metacam and synulux.
Just as I thought things were going well Saffie had a sudden collapse again of both legs on 16th December so back to the vets we went.
Vets said right hip is still in place but it may of been right knee dislocating and left hip that caused the collapse and decided to keep her in over night. Saffie came home the next day and vet said right knee needs doing asap.
Saffie went back to the vets on 20th December to have right knee sorted out. The Operation appeared to go well and they kept Saffie in over night. Saffie came home the next day and we were told yet again complete rest and carry on with all meds.
Hey we actually had a good Christmas no mishaps with Saffie.
Back to the vets new years eve to have stitches out and vet seems really happy with right side of her rear end........ maybe I spoke to soon.
Back to the vets 2nd January as Saffie seemed really lame this morning but vet said everything seemed OK so just keep up the rest.
The rest of January went quite well with regular check ups at the vets.
4th of February back to the vets again this time Saffie has a bad ear infection so we were given ear drops and ear flush. Saffie was admitted into the vets again on 8th February to have her left hip templated so another general anesthetic.
While she was under they gave her ears a good clan out as they were still very mucky. Came home the same day and seemed fine. We didnt have to go back to the vets then until 4th March and the vet seems really happy with the right hand side progress so now he discusses sorting out the left hand side.
Saffie had her left hip operation done on the 17th March 2011 which went well. They kept her in 2 nights then she was allowed to come home. Vet has told me that left knee is also dislocated so that will need sorting once she is over the hip operation.
We went back to the vets on 28th March and Saffie had all her stitches out. We dont have to go back now till April wwoohhoooo.
18th April back to the vets for a check up and all is going well with left hip so vet sorted out getting knee done on 26th April.
Knee operation went well. Stitches were taken out 6th May. Whilst there I mentioned to the vet that her skin was starting to look bad again so he took blood sample to test her thyroid which thankfully came back normal.
OMG 9th May and Saffie is lame again, took her to the vets and they did x rays which showed up that she had re fractured her left knee grrrr, how much more, oh yes apparently she had done it on the right side as well but we didn’t know.
Plenty of rest is still advised, the vet is hoping it will heal without any intervention.
So at the moment we are still on rest rest and more rest but you try telling that to Saffie. We are off to the vets today 6th June to see how things are going.
What amazes me is through all this that Saffie has gone through she is still wagging her tail and lifting my spirits. She is an amazing chow chow and I love her with all my heart. She has made me laugh and cry at some points but best of all she is still here with me and hopefully she will be able to have a happy future.
What really annoys me about all this is that the breeders have made no contact what so ever through all this and they still carry on breeding of the same parents as Saffie even when they knew all about her. What does that tell you about them?????
You can make your own decisions.
